RE: vBulletin

Personally 1@Xyphien there are some heavily customized sites that look good on VB in my opinion. One being the modding site next gen update which I've always swear uses a heavily customized form of vBulletin 5 (though not entirely sure). I have seen some sites that are able to pull it off.
I still prefer Xenforo. Invision Power Board isn't too bad either.
I haven't seen it personally. I agree with you XF is amazing, IPB is good, and there's another one that's making it's rise that looks really good. I can't remember the name though.

Not sure if you mean Vanilla. I heard it's fairly decent but extremely expensive. There's one called Flarum that's free a lot of people are talking about too. Sublime Text uses that for their forums I believe.

RE: vBulletin

Back in 2009 when I started getting into web development I actually refused and still do to this day, refuse to use any site using VB. They all look almost the exact same, 90% of them have the VB favicon on it, and the entire site is just clunky and junky looking. I have an extreme bias towards VB to be completely honest, though I do not knock anyone who uses it, I simply do not like to use the system as a viewer or dev.
One thing I always do is customize. Some of my sites so much so that you can't even tell what the core script is any more. hehe

XF is amazing
Hell yeah!

RE: vBulletin

I'm just glad VB's lawsuit against Xenforo never went all the way.
What lawsuit was that?

I loved vbulletin and it gave a good community feel but our host wanted us to upgrade and the next level wasn't very secure so we chose to switch to XenForo for Christianity Haven. I loved all the mods/add ons we had with vbulletin but to try to get that same feel would cost too much with XenForo so that's the downside of switching.

RE: vBulletin

1@Lämmchen there was a lawsuit against Xenforo Ltd. by the company that made vBulletin - Internet Brands. Eventually I believe the lawsuit was later dropped. Xenforo was actually partially developed by a couple former vBulletin employees and while in my opinion it never had valid ground to be filed, apparently vBulletin thought it did. This was along time ago though. vBulletin was actually completely overhauled their entire cooperation since vBulletin 3. It used to be ran by a company called Jelsoft which admittedly did a much better job.

pretty much this, glad it was jump the gun lawsuit, hate to think what options I had if I was stuck with IPB 4.

RE: vBulletin

I remember trying out the backend a couple times during the XF trial, but I never got much of an opinion on the back end of the software. I've been willing to give it a try over the years, but never got around to be willing to fork the money over, just to try it for a year. I do know that the expansion system ishn't as active as the XF addon system is, which makes it a little annoying to decide what addons to try with the standard software suite.

Once the year is up it's still yours. You just can't upgrade or get support (unless via their community forum). But you definitely do NOT have to pay just to use it.

RE: vBulletin

My experience with vbulletin is only as a forum poster. I have never operated a forum with vbulletin. vbulletin official sites mention that over 100,000 websites are built with vbulletin including Nasa. I think the license cost of $249 is too expensive.

RE: vBulletin

I don't think it could be "that bad" or it would be out of business.   What are some redeeming qualities?   Anyway, I think a lot of stuff might be blamed on inexperienced developers, as in people who own the websites.

RE: vBulletin

The vbulletin is a popular one when it comes to website creation, forum owners make use of it, business websites etc, all make use of it. I don't have much experience via vbulletin, since I own no forum, even if I own at the moment I wouldn't afford one due to its expensive price.

I have never used vBulletin for my self but I have used forums, as a user and as a staff, that were built on vBulletin. I do not think this is a garbage, it is good software. I think the lifetime subscription fee is just $250, which I think is pretty good
