If you find that you see what you think is the paranormal right before you fall asleep or right upon waking up you might want to investigate these:

The term hypnopompic describes the period when a person wakes up. Hypnagogic defines the period when a person falls asleep.

Why do I bring this up? Well, even though I've had paranormal experiences I also suffer from having those sleep hallucinations...and yes, they seem so real! I've actually hit my husband thinking something was on his face. :sneaky:

RE: Paranormal or Hypnagogia

To be honest in site of where heaven is to the earth, some people just haven't passed on yet. Simple as that. Those who don't believe in an afterlife, I can understand their disbelief. If certain people out there believe in a God then the paranormal isn't much far from that.

As for sleep hallucinations, that's something I've had to deal with every day for the past 10 years or so. I actually may have one of the above illnesses you stated. A buddy of mine 1@Andox88[/uSER] who used to be staff here pointed out what hypnogia was and said he thought that might be an issue I was having. Personally it might not be that at all. I was thinking it could be a temporal lobe disorder considering I can't visualize my own memory yet I still remember very easily. Though that's also a symptom of the above as well. Either way good news is I'm starting to do a lot better recently. Whatever caused it seems to be subsiding so that's good.

What types of things have you "seen" that you think might have been related to hypnagogia?

One thing that has always bothered me is that even though I know that some things seen were just the brain extending into REM mode, there have been times when my daughter and I have seen the same thing while "asleep" only moments apart. At our old house she would see a green hand and maybe it was stuck in my brain that she had seen it in the house but there were a couple times when I saw it too.

The one time she didn't tell me about something before we had both seen it was a little gnome like man. I saw it first upon waking up and tried smothering him with a pillow...but he wasn't really THERE and then she came running into my room moments later saying she saw a little man come into her room. Creepy.

This is a good topic! I never heard of this term before. I have experienced this as well. I tend to have very vivid dreams & even before drifting off, I would 'see' something. I never could tell if I was seeing something or that "mind playing tricks" on you. I've learned to just let it go, not focus too much on it. But I can tell you, some of them were quite frightening!

RE: Paranormal or Hypnagogia

I've never had issues like this before, and haven't directly seen people with that issue. But I have had my fair share of weird situations in my family, with things happening to them at night while asleep. My sisters would sleep walk and do things, and never remember doing those things. That particular thing would happen when they were most stressed, or had increasing issues with something.

So I think seeing stuff at night as you are going to sleep or waking up, can be related somehow, as the body tends to do things differently, person to person.

RE: Paranormal or Hypnagogia

I've been "spooked" out of my sleep before and sometimes have dreams so intense that I'll flail my arms and kick/thrash before waking up. I don't believe in God or the paranormal.

RE: Paranormal or Hypnagogia

Sleep hallucinations are fairly common amongst people who are rather stressed. Though experts point out there is nothing to worry about it as most must have experienced it at one time or the other. Exact causes for this is still not very clear. Since hypnagogic hallucinations happen soon after you fall asleep, probably your other reflexes are still active as such it might simply be something that your brain might do during the process of falling asleep.
