As French firefighters battle to save what remains of the historic Notre Dame Cathedral, questions are being asked about the cause of the inferno.

Here’s what we know so far.

The blaze started at about 6.50pm local time on Monday night — 2.50am AEST. A spokesman for the cathedral told local media the fire alarm http://went off almost immediately.

Smoke could be seen coming from the building’s attic and pictures and video of the fire were being shared around the world on social media within minutes.

Horrified viewers watched in real time as the iconic gothic structure’s main spire collapsed as about 400 firefighters battled the flames.

French firefighters said the cause of the blaze was not immediately clear but was “potentially linked” to ongoing renovations at the 850-year-old monument.

“At this moment we don’t know how the fire started,” a cathedral http://spokesman told http://The Local. “There shouldn’t have been any workmen on the site because they stop between 17:00 and 17:30.”

Police have launched an investigation into the fire, which is reported to be focusing on an “involuntary” cause rather than a criminal act.

City prosecutor Remy Heitz said late Monday night it was “too early” to determine the cause but that the preliminary investigation suggested the blaze was started accidentally.

“Everything will be put in place to determine the origin of the fire,” government Minister Laurent Nunez told local media from the scene.

HEROISM IN PARIS: Firefighters Plunge Into Notre Dame To Save Religious Treasures

On Monday, as the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris was ablaze, millions of Catholics around the world were distraught at the prospect not only of losing a building dearly beloved to them, but also the numerous religious artifacts inside the structure.

But this is where the French showed genuine heroism. Not only did the Chaplain of the Paris Firefighters plunge into the blaze to save the Blessed Sacrament and the Crown of Thorns, but a human chain of firefighters was formed to save the treasures inside.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo commented: “Thanks to the @PompiersParis, the police and the municipal agents who realized tonight a formidable human chain to save the works of #OurDame. The crown of thorns, the tunic of Saint Louis and several other major works are now in a safe place.”

Additionally, French billionaire François-Henri Pinault said he and his family will give 100 million Euros for the reconstruction of the cathedral. Pinault’s son François-Henri Pinault, the president of the Artemis Group holding company,http:// said, "This tragedy strikes all the French, and well beyond that, all those dedicated to spiritual values. Faced with such a tragedy, everyone wishes to revive this jewel of our heritage as quickly as possible."

As http://news.com.auhttp://news.com.au reported, “France’s Interior Ministry said firefighters had managed to save the main structure and the building’s two bell towers, despite two-thirds of the roof and http://Notrehttp://Notre Dame’s iconic spire destroyed. Among the most celebrated artworks inside are its three stained-glass rose windows, placed high up on the west, north and south faces of the cathedral. Its priceless treasures also include the Catholic relic, the crown of thorns, which is only occasionally displayed, including on Fridays during Lent.”

As for the Crown of Thrones, which originated in Jerusalem, it is traditionally kept in Sainte-Chappelle in Paris, which was built to house the crown. It is presented on the first Friday of each month and every Friday during Lent.

RE: Notre Dame Cathedral

Interesting story. Glad they were able to salvage some of the Relics. At least it wasn't done on purpose. That would be a shame.

RE: Notre Dame Cathedral

Heard it was caused by a spark/cigarette or something that lit one of the scaffolding for the renovations on fire. Glad to hear they managed to save a bunch of the historic works and other important relics. Shame that most of the building is gone though, place was dated to 12th century.

RE: Notre Dame Cathedral

I had visited that Cathedral back in 2011. It was marvelous! really beautiful building, it wasn't that much of a fancy ones like in Rome but it had its own appeal.

Most of the old cathedrals in Rome were also brought down by fire.

RE: Notre Dame Cathedral

The Pope has finally commented about it.

Today we unite in prayer with the people of France, as we wait for the sorrow inflicted by the serious damage to be transformed into hope with reconstruction. Holy Mary, Our Lady, pray for us. http://#NotreDame

Here is one for your enjoyment.

At least it's insinuating rebuilding the structure rather then destroying it (minecraft). At the very least it's doing that.
