Free vs Paid Hosting

As for free hosting, you have the type where you sign up and you get limited features, but not ads.   Well, the hosting owners hope you will upgrade to pay.   Now, the 2nd type is free with ads.   Two major places with this model are Forumotion and ProBoards.  In this type, the hosting is fast, despite the traffic, but to get the ads off you must do an upgrade.   Now the third type, gets what they claim are unlimited features and fast hosting, but no one-on-one support.  This is the type for InfinityFree.net.

Myself, I can see that shared hosting is so cheap, that it's not worth it to go free.  Nonetheless, free is still a powerful business model in the hosting world.

RE: Free vs Paid Hosting

Since not everyone have the money to purchase a domain or hosting services, the free hosting is an option to go into. Both have their merits and demerits, just as the OP described.

Free hosting only gives you 5 GB max disk space though. Cheap hosting is the key to success. You can get a Virtual Private Server for like $50 a year with 4 gb ram so I don't really see why this is so hard.

If you are serious about your website, you should never use free hosting. Free hosting has limited services. You can test websites through  free hosting but if you want to launch a real website, you should buy hosting.
