What is the difference between cartoons and animes?

1. It may be possible that both these are the same and western country has adopted cartoons and eastern countries has adopted the word animes.
2. It can also be possible that both are different, based on the nature of storyboard (from a manga or not), the process of creation (animation methodology)

What do you think is the distinction. I have never been able to zero in on anything.

The distinction primarily lies in cultural origins. Cartoons are often a Western term for animated works, typically associated with shows like 'Looney Tunes' or 'Adventure Time.' Anime, on the other hand, is the Japanese term for animation and is often characterized by a unique art style and storytelling that reflects Japanese culture. It’s not just about geography but also stylistic and thematic differences. To further elaborate, anime tends to emphasize detailed art, complex characters, and overarching narratives, while cartoons often focus on episodic stories and humor. However, there’s overlap, and the lines can blur with shows like 'Avatar: The Last Airbender,' which has anime-like qualities.

Ever watch an anime that seems more like a cartoon but they call it anime? Super interesting to me is animes like Naruto which is mainly anime but looks more like a cartoon. One peice is another example. Personally with that said in my opinion it's less the art style but more the style overall in my opinion where the shows take on action and suspense really makes it an anime.

Anime is like east Asia theme cartoon while cartoon was for other countries.

First, a pet peeve. The plural for of anime is anime, or expanded it's anime titles. Animes just drives me nuts (and I'm already crazy!) It's almost nearly as bad as animez.... but I digress.

Anime is simply short for animations, a word that the Japanese originally coined, and has come to embody the animated form of media with an emphasis on exaggeration. Cartoons, a mostly Western construct originally, is often associated with humor, and meant to entertain/occupy children, although there are some notable animations that are really not suited for children. Anime also has a wider realm of genres than just humor. Many of the plots contain within anime can be mature, and thought provoking. There's also quite a bit of perversion and fan service in many anime.
