Isolated States

Old nations like Apartheid South Africa and newer ones like North Korea and now Russia are pretty much "cut off".    Do you think this isolation makes a difference?   Well, in North Korea's case it never caused a regime change, and a South African regime did fall, but it was a tough thing to accomplish.
