Excluding royalty, I heard if your son has the same name as you, the son gets Jr but if your son's son has the same name as you, and not your son, the son's son get IIMany Kings and Queens have used it in the past. For a King and Queen it's almost necessary. It gets a bit confusing the higher the number. My opinion on it is to represent a family member that may be a Jr. down the line or a King and Queen it's a good method.

When used for titles, whether for people or games (ie. Queen Victoria II or Final Fantasy IX) they just look better..
