I'd say about £600-£750 would be my budget, a comfy mattress is a must - I hate waking up after an uncomfortable night with a seized back..
I also don't like cheap metal bedframes, and much prefer something like a Divan.

I would spend up to £1000 on a mattress. They usually last 7 to seven years, so when it's time to replace, it's a no-brainer to get a good quality one that's going to last. For me, my health comes first, ensuring that I do everything in my power to prevent back problems later on in my life.

Do any of you also purchase a box spring set to go with your mattress? It's supposed to make it last longer but I don't know if that's true of the newer type of mattresses.
Also, what size mattress do you have? We have all kinds of sizes in our house because family comes to visit so we like to make them comfortable.
Our Master bedroom has a King sized mattress with box spring set and we paid probably $3,000 USD for it a decade ago and it's supposed to last 15 years. It's about time for a new one. I was thinking of getting an adjustable platform where the head and feet can go up or down instead of the box spring. We have one of those for a Queen sized mattress in another room and it's really nice to have some elevation for your head when you have a cold or respiratory problems. I think we paid around $700 USD for that.

A bed will last ten years or more, give or take. You will have to use it for 8 hours a day, every day, and the comfort of your bed will affect your muscles, how well you sleep, etc. I see no problem dropping some on an object that will last ten years and can make a huge difference in your quality of life.

I'd generally would go for any good bed that won't make me feel like I am laying on a rock. Though I would generally spend somewhere between 250-750 on a bed. Recently got a mattress that is a dual bed and box spring built in one. Seems to do the trick this time around, though I still have a regular boxspring under it, for added support for the structure of the mattress.
