I wonder if anyone will have this as their dream? One of my neighbors is trying to get into politics. He must be in his 30's. He is running his own business and now he wants to be in politics. I sometimes think why should one get into politics? Have someone inspired them or just for money? Share your thoughts on this.

Probably not just because you have to go campaigning a lot. It's highly in-effective unless you have a large group of supporters and harder for most people to get noticed. Though some do it for years and years and pay lobbyist so that's why. Plus what's on TV plays a role.

Being a mayor wouldn't be too bad. It would be a good job equivalent to a cop I suppose. Anyway, being a mayor doesn't piss people off to much, no need for secret service or watching your back. Well, that's assuming it's a small town.
Now, if you have guts and want to put yourself on the line, you could try for some higher office.

To be a politician, one does not need to have a high IQ or educational qualification but a successful politician should know to swim in troubled waters and also basically have a helping people mentality. Social welfare and survival instincts will go a long way in making a person a successful politician. We need politicians also in our society not just doctors, engineers, farmers, IT guys etc.

I have never in my dreams thought of being a politician. At the same time I see so many youngsters with political aspirations. I doubt if there is any minimum qualification to be active in politics. The only quality required is that you should be strong enough to receive brickbat. Politics is the best option for people who wants to get rich in a short period of time. I believe most of the politicians are in the field to make quick buck rather than serving people. Service to the society is just incidental to them, sadly.
