I look forward to developer insights about custom CMS approaches from individuals who have already implemented that system. A custom CMS provides benefits to website development but creating one also invites certain negative aspects. What are the strengths and pitfalls of custom content management systems (CMS).

My only experience seeing that was when someone from Forum Promotion created their own forum software. It was really cool, but it wasn't expanded into a franchise (like phpBB or XenForo). In fact, it was just sold to someone.

The drawback of custom CMS might be that everything that is added has to be custom made, just like the CMS. This fact is not true with non-CMS stuff like XenForo, MyBB etc..

I personally prefer to buy software which what we use is xenforo 2. The fact that I prefer as well to make add-ons myself is less of an issue for most people. You will never believe how far the IDE PHPStorm by jet brains has become. The fact that it comes packaged with an AI called Junie that can generate an entire add-on and do it for you. AI might make it possible where this could actually work but custom add-ons and custom forum software or such distant ledgers.
