I wish to build my website on a free CMS yet I struggle to understand the advantages and limitations it has. Of course, it is very crucial for the users to understand the positive and negative aspects that is attached with using a CMS system for free. I use WordPress, something that wouldn't get a lot of heat from trendy developers. I also use phpBB for a forum, but trendy developers would look down on that as archaic. In fact, the style is to use premium forum software, which in many ways is better, but the free stuff can be as good or better, given conditions like DIY (do-it-yourself) work etc..

Wordpress isn't too bad but free forum software will never be as good as paid opitions. That fact that if your low on many I recommend a cheap VPS host with Direct Admin which is only $5/mo now and then switch to paid software after you get the site going. Vendors like Xenforo Ltd. have transfer tools you can use to transfer your site from pretty much any free forum software so you can always use this as an option where you build the community first and then upgrade software at a later date.
