Both games have some features to decide. Wii U gives you an advantage over your pocket. You can get many games in less budget moreover no specific place is required. On the other hand, Switch is an expensive game and requires a garage, it ultimately requires a gaming environment.

I do not really know, maybe the the Switch is a great option in my opinion. It has games that appeal to wider audiences like Mario and Pokemon, but there is also tons of more complex games that he can grow into like Super Smash Bros. or Legend of Zelda. They can hold it and move around the house or whatever with some options. End of the day you do not want your kid seating in the same location for hours in and days out. I never thought about buying a Wii U because it's outdated. I think children would prefer the switch especially to play games like Splatoon 2. The Wii U is good for a family console but your child wants to play Pokemon and different things and the new Mario Kart racing then he should have a switch. It's also a handheld that can use the TV or be a handheld which is why it's called Switch.

I wouldn't buy a Wii U for a kid. I'd rather give my old one to them instead. But if I had to buy either for them, it would be a Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch has way more better games and it's still supported by Nintendo.
