  • How do you break the bad news to a patient as a medical doctor?

Being a doctor is a great responsibility. People expect positive vibes from a doctor. But a doctor cannot always deliver the best news, often the news is bad. At this crucial point,it’s up to the doctor to handle the patient. There are many ways can open bad news. They may begin it with a joke like Oh dear! You got COVID but worry you not, you will be vaccinated. Sometimes they can relate a story to the situation like the stories of recovered ones. But patience is very important.

Some doctors are very blunt when it comes to breaking such news as they are of the opinion that it's no need beating about the bush. It's really painful when you deal with a doctor who lacks compassion.

This is being compassionate and a solution provider in a tough situation. It really helps the patient get by the difficulty and challenging time.

I have witnessed some cases where the back news was informed to someone and he collapsed and died as well. Seriously, doctors need to show more compassion.

Doctors are supposed to be problem solvers and not the other way around. If they are not successful in getting a good result, they should know that they failed at their job and be compassionate in breaking the news.

Some of them are just dicks because it's not their own family members that die or have to receive the bad news.

I would definitely be changing hospital when a doctor or a nurse does not show any sign of affection and pain for me in such circumstances.

Once I hit the hospital, I have already zero down my mind that it's a 50/50 chance of survival, so if anything goes wrong, I will not be too shocked.
